After leaving NMSU he joined the military and served three years in the US Army. He then returned home and began his coaching carrier at Robertson High as the Head Assistant Baseball Coach under Larry Archuleta for eight years, never missing the state play-offs. He coached football in ’94 and ’95 as the Offensive Coordinator under Art Abreu for a combined record of 18 wins to 3 losses and was the Head Coach for the Cardinal Basketball Team in ’96 and again in 2004 winning the Stu-Clark Tourney in ’96. Coach Ortiz served the City of Las Vegas as the Parks Supervisor and Parks and Recreation Director for a combined 10 years and was instrumental in obtaining the funding for Phase 2 of the City’s Recreation Center.

The Luna Rough Rider Baseball Program has been improving since its inception. We had our best season last year posting a record of 19-wins to 28-losses. Our goal this year is to get over the hump and be on the positive side of .500 allowing us to be in the post-season as we are Independent. We are the only Division ll team in Region V of the National Junior College Athletic Association. If we get to the .500+ mark, we will represent Region V in the District Tournament, which is somewhat equivalent to the NCAA’s Super Regional Tournament, and will have five region champions competing for a spot in the NJCAA Div. ll World Series in Tennessee. The District Tourney has always had great representation and will be a huge challenge to win. We are striving to make the LCC Rough Rider Baseball Program one of the premier programs in the country and invite you to become a member of our Rough Rider Family. Give me a call at your convenience (505)699-1628 anytime. GO RIDERS!
