Luna to offer passenger bus training program

Luna Community College will begin offering a bus training program beginning in January. The bus training program is in addition to the CDL program currently offered.

“The passenger bus training program will enable students to obtain employment with any employer that requires a bus training endorsement,” says Program Administrator Tracy Morales. “We hope to start mid-January of 2024. There is an ongoing need for all classes of commercial drivers in our local area, state and nation.”

Luna’s CDL Program Administrator Tracy Morales and Contract Education Coordinator/Advisor Karen Wezwick are pictured with a Luna bus that will be used to train drivers.

The bus training program is one of several programs approved by the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act. The others are teacher education, emergency medical technician, CDL, welding, dental assisting, early childhood and business administration.

“We’re open for business,” says Morales. “We had a good year and are adding services to our driver training program.”

Luna’s CDL program provides training for individuals in northern New Mexico to learn a skill and earn a license creating opportunities to get better jobs with more pay.

“Our program continues to accept students year-round and we have orientations every Thursday,” says Morales. “Individuals can come in and talk to us and sign up for the training.”

Morales has been in the commercial driving business for over 21 years. She has been with Luna nearly two years.

“People can have a choice on which training they want,” says Morales. “We want to thank the community for their continued support of our programs.”

Morales says that an additional instructor will begin working in the department in November.
