Rough Riders win one of three at Lamar

Luna Community College tasted victory for the second consecutive weekend on the baseball diamond, taking one of three games at Lamar Community College in Lamar, Colo.

The Rough Riders are 2-5 to start the 2021 schedule under head coach T.C. Nusser.

Getting out to a promising start with a two-run homer by Isaac Toledo, Luna led Saturday’s opener 8-2 in the fourth inning before the Lopes rallied to pull even at 9-9 going into the sixth. The Rough Riders pulled ahead with a run and loaded the bases in the top of the sixth but Lamar stranded all three base runners to escape. Then in their half of the frame, the Lopes surged ahead with seven runs to secure a 16-10 win.

In game two, the Rough Riders never trailed after taking a 1-0 edge early on and then adding five runs to build a 6-1 lead through three innings. Down by three, Lamar jammed the basepaths in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the potential go-ahead run came to bat with only one out. But Luna’s pitching and defense held firm, recording two critical outs.
Neither side scored in the ninth, and Luna had a 7-4 victory.

Ruger Bravo, Dakota Cummings and K.T. Gearlds pitched for the Rough Riders in the win.

In Sunday’s finale, Lamar took a 6-3 advantage into the final frame. The Riders made it interesting by scoring twice to pull within a run of tying the game, but the host Lopes closed it out to win 6-5.

Luna’s baseball team is scheduled to play a four-game set at Southeast (Nebraska) Community College this coming weekend in Beatrice, Neb.

Meanwhile, the Luna softball team is slated to make its season debut at noon on Friday against Trinidad State Junior College as part of a pod-play event that will see the Rough Rider women play six games in three days in Lamar, Colo.
