Jacob Limas of Luna Community College has been named Region IX Pitcher of the Week for his efforts at El Paso Community College in a road series Feb. 4-5 in El Paso, Texas. Limas, a freshman from Las Cruces, is a general science major.

On Saturday, Limas went five and two-thirds innings and struck out six while holding the Tejanos to two runs on three hits and four walks. That pitching helped secure Luna’s first win of the season, a 3-2 score.

In his season debut, Jan. 29 at Eastern Arizona, Limas threw a three-hitter with no runs and no walks and four strikeouts through six innings of an eventual 1-0 loss in an 11-inning pitchers’ duel.

“Jacob has had two really good outings, and we expect him to only get stronger,” said T.C. Nusser, head coach of the Rough Riders. “The sky is the limit for him. He is a great kid on and off the field.”

Limas is a freshman, right-handed pitcher from Las Cruces. He is an alumnus of Onate High School.

The Rough Riders (2-8) picked up their second win of the young season on Wednesday (Feb. 9), earning a split with Community Christian College. CCC won game one 6-2 before Luna took the nightcap in a shootout, 19-13. The doubleheader was technically Luna’s home opener but was played at Rio Rancho High School due to field conditions.

The Riders are in a particularly busy stretch and have 11 games scheduled in a 12-day span.

The team plays a three-game set at Scottsdale (Ariz.) Post Grad this Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 12-13). Then it’s off to Wayland Baptist JV for a doubleheader on Tuesday the 15th. The following weekend (Feb. 19-20) , Luna visits New Mexico Military for a four-game series in Roswell.

Luna softball opens its season today (Thursday, Feb. 10) with a noontime game against Cisco College as part of the Permian Basin Invitational at Odessa, Texas. The Rough Riders are also scheduled to play six games in the three-day event.
