Luna baseball at home this week Softball visits Western Texas after Wednesday scratch

Weather conditions have led to cancellation of Wednesday’s scheduled home opener for the Luna Community College softball team.

Luna, coached by Randall Krutsch, had been scheduled to host Frank Phillips College out of Borger, Texas, in a doubleheader at Cowgirl Field. No makeup date had been announced as of this writing.

The Rough Riders (2-8) are scheduled to play three games at Western Texas College this coming Sunday and Monday in Snyder, Texas. It’ll be the start of a busy week with seven games in seven days (two apiece on Thursday and Friday, March 3-4, plus one on Saturday, March 5, in McCook, Neb.).

Brianna Maldonado and Victoria Gonzales combined to drive in five runs this past Sunday in the finale of Luna’s four-game series at El Paso Community College.

Western Texas (9-5) won four of five to start the season and had won five in a row before losing one on Sunday, Feb. 20. The Westerners are hitting a robust .412, and Taighen Whitzel has four home runs and 26 runs batted in, both team highs.

Luna baseball (2-17) is slated to host Lamar Junior College for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday at Brandt Park on the New Mexico Highlands University campus. Saturday’s nine-inning game is set to begin at 1 p.m.; a Sunday doubleheader starts at noon.

The series will be open to the public. It will be the first games of the season played in Las Vegas; the Riders’ Feb. 16 home opener was held in Rio Rancho.

Milo Behrens (17), Dominic Lucero (16) and Kobe Carpio (13) lead the Rough Riders in hits; Carpio has a team-high 12 runs batted in.

Lamar (3-12) is coming off a win in the finale of a four-game set at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs. The Runnin’ Lopes have been one of the more competitive teams in Region IX, having won the region in 2019.
