Students say they have fun, relax in ceramics class

If there is one thing you can say about Dr. Bernadette Maldonado’s ceramics class is that her students enjoy it—a lot.

“It’s therapeutic, it teaches patience and relieves stress,” said Maldonado who is teaching the class for the first time at Luna.

Maldonado says that her ceramics class has been successful with 13 students signed up this semester with several others looking forward to next year’s class.

“It’s my favorite class,” says Luna student Reyna Medina. “I hope Luna funds more art classes in the future. Everyone has fun here; there is a lot of dialogue. I started off in drawing class and I always wanted to learn about ceramics.”

Ceramic objects are made by combining raw materials, such as clay, earthen minerals, and water. Students shape them into forms using hand building, wheel throwing, or mold casting techniques.

Kim Baca and Reyna Medina shape their projects during a recent class.

“It’s a great class; I really like everything about it,” says student Daylene Ponzar. “I intend to take Ceramics 2 next semester.”

Maldonado says that she has been working with ceramics for nearly 30 years.

“It’s awesome,” says Maldonado.
