Luna student Mary Frances Bibb says college has been helpful

Luna student Mary Frances Bibb has not let the current Covid-19 pandemic stop her from continuing her education.
Bibb is taking a calculus II hybrid class with Dr. Rita Surdi.

Luna student Mary Frances Bibb is taking a calculus II hybrid class at Luna. As part of Covid-19 protocol, masks and social distancing are required.

“Having Dr. Surdi as my professor has made the transition easy,” says Bibb. “She’s an amazing professor. Having Luna here in Las Vegas is very helpful. Instructors provide more individual attention, which is important in education.”
Luna, like most colleges across the nation, is teaching mostly online sprinkled in with a few classes on campus.
“When the pandemic first hit, it was a very difficult transition not taking classes on campus,” says Bibb. “I prefer face-to-face classes, but I haven’t missed any school during this time.”
Luna’s math department has long been given high acclaim in the higher educational circles.
“I appreciate Luna, many students like coming up here for math classes,” says Bibb.
Bibb is one of those fortunate students who takes classes at both Luna and neighboring Highlands University. Bibb is majoring in forestry and one day would like to work in the animal rescue and rehabilitation arena.
“I like being around animals and being outside,” says Bibb. “I remember always wanting to do something like this since I was about three to five years old.”
Bibb says that the pandemic has allowed her to refocus on what is important in life.
“I’ve been able to spend more time with my family, I appreciate them so much,” says Bibb. “My mom (Anna) has gone to the moon and back for me. As a nurse in the community, she is my hero.”
Like many, Bibb says she is hopeful that the pandemic will soon come to an end.
“I miss being able to gather with my friends and not worry about none of us getting sick,” says Bibb. “Las Vegas is a resilient community. It’s awesome that Las Vegas has community college and a university.”
On advice to other students, Bibb has this to say: “Take care of your mental health, be safe and always maintain your social distancing.”
