Luna Board of Trustees reinstates spring sports seasons
The Luna Community College Board of Trustees reinstated the college spring sports seasons in a special meeting on Wednesday morning.
The board of trustees unanimously approved a plan in which the administration will identify funding for the athletic department that will cover expenses for both softball and baseball for the remainder of the spring season.
The Luna baseball team is scheduled to play Trinidad State Junior College (Colo.) on Monday, March 15, and Tuesday, March 16, at Brandt Field on the campus of New Mexico Highlands University. A doubleheader is scheduled to start at noon on Monday, with one nine-inning game scheduled at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Spectators will be allowed at 33 percent capacity.
The Luna softball team is scheduled to host Western Nebraska Community College later this month at Highlands’ Cowgirl Field for a four-game stint. The games with Western Nebraska Community College will be played on either Thursday, March 25 and Friday, March 26 or Monday, March 29 and Tuesday, March 30. Details on these games are being worked on. Both the baseball and softball schedules have been modified to include more home games.
On Friday, March 5, the college had decided to cancel the remainder of its spring athletics season primarily because of budgeting. Both the Luna softball and baseball teams compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association and are members of the NJCAA Region 9 Conference. Softball and baseball are the only athletic teams Luna sponsors.
“This is the right thing to do for everyone involved, especially our student-athletes,” said Luna Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Phyllis Martinez.
