Law Enforcement Training Center to host April 20 open house

Luna inviting law enforcement personnel, campus community to see state-of-art simulators

Luna Community College is ready to unveil its new Law Enforcement Training Center, and the college wants you to be among the first to preview the facility and its state-of-the-art simulators.

The Law Enforcement Training Center at Luna Community College will host an open house Tuesday, April 20, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the former General Education building on the north end of the Las Vegas main campus. The event is open to Luna students, employees and trustees and local law enforcement personnel. Staff will maintain COVID-safe protocols and conduct small-group tours of the center throughout the day. Groups will be limited in size, and surfaces will be cleaned and disinfected between group tours.

At the heart of the center is a pair of state-of-the-art simulators designed primarily to significantly improve critical judgments, skills and expertise for law enforcement personnel. The VirTra, Inc.-manufactured equipment includes a simulator with a 300-degree immersive and interactive environment programmed with a variety of potential situations in which officers commonly find themselves. This simulator enables the participant to develop decision-making, and use of de-escalation techniques and varying degrees of force, including firearms. The center’s driving simulator places the participant in any of a variety of vehicles, traffic, weather, lighting and road conditions to develop proficiency behind the wheel. VirTra representatives say Luna is the first entity in the nation to introduce both simulators for training availability in one site. Along with the simulators, the center will have the benefit of nationally certified training curriculum.
Police officers and others in law enforcement are especially welcome to visit the open house and learn how they can benefit from its training opportunities. Those interested in criminal justice studies – Luna offers associate degree and certificate programs in the field – may also be interested, as students in those programs will be exposed to the simulation environments. Others who may be interested are those seeking firing range practice and defensive driving experience.

The open house is sponsored by the Law Enforcement Training Center and Luna Community College Student Senate. For more information, please contact Jason Killian, 505-454-2551 or LETC@luna.edu.
