Reyes Coca says he likes Luna’s community-like feel

The following is a one-on-one interview with Luna Business Lead Instructor Reyes Coca.

Name: Reyes Coca

Position: Business Lead Instructor

What year did you start working for Luna?
I started working at Luna in 2018 as a Business Instructor, and then I left in 2020. I returned this semester, fall 2022.

What do you like most about Luna and why?
I like the community feel. All the faculty and staff are friendly and welcomed me back with open arms. The students are great and the campus is beautiful. There is potential for Luna and I am glad to be part of the Luna community.

What does your job entail; what does a day at Luna look like for you?
My job is very challenging as I pretty much do everything for the School of Business. I do both faculty and administrative leadership work. In the morning, I focus on my faculty duties as I prepare for my classes and do grading. In the afternoon I focus on my administrative leadership duties as I work on curriculum development, recruitment, articulation agreements, ACBSP accreditation, adjunct mentorship, serve on committees, strategic planning, class scheduling, advisement, and business community outreach.

Favorite food and why?
My favorite food is homemade tacos just like my grandma used to make them.

Favorite TV show and why?
I have a variety of interests. I cannot just choose one favorite. I like to binge watch shows on Netflix such as Friday Night Lights and Cobra Kai. Lately I got into Discovery channel shows such as Gold Rush and Alaskan Bush People. Survivor also makes my top five list.

Where would you like to see yourself in five years?
I would like to see myself still teaching in higher education. I love the challenge of teaching and the positive difference it makes in the world.

*What is your greatest strength?
My greatest strength is my creativity. My mind is always thinking of new ways to get things done.

What would you consider your biggest accomplishment in life and why?
As an educator at heart, my biggest accomplishment is when my students are successful. When I see one of my students accomplish something meaningful in their life, I feel that I accomplished something meaningful in my life.

What do you consider a good day in your life?
I think a good day is when I am productive and I earn my rest. Whether it be academic work or yard work, I feel like I need to get something done. After that, I will relax and reward myself with a good meal, movie, or outdoor adventure with family or friends.

What do you enjoy doing outside of working at Luna?
When I am not working, I like to enjoy outdoor adventures such as camping, fishing, hiking, and kayaking. I tried snowboarding one time and it did not go very well, but I would like to give it another shot this winter. I love going to the movie theater to watch a good film with popcorn and coke in hand. I always enjoy exercising and the challenge of playing any kind of sport. When I am able to travel and explore new places, it brings me a sense of wonder and a smile to my face.

Any final comments?
Great job on The Luna Light. It is one of the best college publications I have seen. I always enjoy reading it.
